Monday, February 21,
2011, area residents, both bank customers and non-customers, received
phone calls from an “unknown number”. The automated message, also known
as a “robo-call,” claimed that their debit card had been deactivated and
their number must be entered to reactivate it. The scam was done by
placing blind phone calls to cell phone users through various cell phone
providers.
“Please remember that
United Bank will never call and ask you for personal information over
the telephone,” explained Bob Jones, President and CEO of United Bank.
“If personal information is requested, you can guarantee it is a scam.”
United Bank encourages everyone to use extreme caution when providing
personal information. If you are ever in doubt, hang up and call your
local bank office.
