 Hurricane Season is Here!-

Preparedness Checklist for Families

While it has always been important to have an action plan for dealing with a hurricane, the recent experience of residents in the northern gulf coast has shown it to be absolutely crucial. The following are some items and actions that all families should review as hurricane season approaches:

Identification Are your driver’s licenses, social security cards, birth and marriage certificates and passports handy?  Make copies of these items and keep them separate from the originals.  Use a waterproof plastic bag to store these and other items in the event of an evacuation.

Checkbook and ATM cards Make sure to bring these items along with you but also make sure to have plenty of cash kept in a secure place.

Financial Statements & Contact Information Brokerage and credit card statements and insurance policies should be available along with copies of these items. Make sure that the servicing agents and institutions phone numbers are correct. You may also want to consider automatic bill payments or internet banking to ensure that no late charges or missed payments occur. This will benefit you in the event of an evacuation, as you can access the internet from wherever you evacuate to.

• Wills and other contracts Consider keeping originals in a bank safe-deposit box and don’t forget to take the key with you.

Homeowners and Automobile insurance policies Unfortunately, property damage is likely.  In order to get your issues solved quickly, have your policies readily accessible.

• Tax Returns – Keep your current tax returns as well as those for 3-4 years prior with you. The last thing your family should have to deal with after a hurricane is the IRS!

Most importantly, however, you should do the following:

• Make certain your family is safe and evacuate if necessary! No financial record or piece of paper is worth risking harm to you and your loved ones.
